The popularity of kiteboarding in Thailand has increased rapidly over the last couple of years and the country now boasts an as active and vibrant kiteboarding scene as anywhere else in the world.
The west coast of Thailand, with its clean off shore waves and strong north-easterly winds is generally considered to be the country’s kiteboarding hub.
For those of you that have never heard of kiteboarding or kitesurfing, then the principles of this exciting and innovative sport are very simple. Basically, a kitesurfer stands on a small board, which is complete with foot straps to help keep them attached to the board. The surfer then uses the power from a large kite, which they control and manoeuvre to help propel themselves across the water.
It might sound quite easy but the reality is that for first timers, kiteboarding can actually be rather challenging. Due to the fact that your body is the only thing that connects the kite and the board, a good level of physical fitness and reasonable amount of strength is required to pilot the kite and steer the actual board through the water, both at the same time!
People are often surprised at the speeds that can be reached when kiteboarding, but when you consider that the kite generates lift in very much the same way as the wing of an aeroplane, then it is hardly surprising that kite surfers are able to reach such speeds.
This can also explain why kiteboarding is becoming so popular and is arguably the most exciting, adrenaline fuelled water sport to be introduced to Koh Samui in recent years. Not only that but it give you a great opportunity to take in Samui’s spectacular beaches and crystal clear waters.
