Koh Samui Tailors
A trip to Koh Samui can provide the perfect opportunity for you to purchase some high quality tailored clothing at a very reasonable price. Forget about bank breaking designer suits or off the peg trousers and dresses that never quite fit properly.
Getting measured up for some tailored garments is something that you shouldn’t miss out on in Thailand and away from the crystal clear waters, golden beaches, fun packed activities and beautiful bar girls, Koh Samui has a number of experienced tailors, with top quality products that you will struggle to find anywhere else.
The vast majority of tailors that are to be found on Koh Samui are located in or around the three of the islands most popular shopping areas, which are Chaweng Beach Road, Lamai Beach and Nathon Market. And it is in these areas where some of the islands best resident tailors and dressmakers.
Probably one of the most famous and experienced tailors that can be found on Koh Samui is Armani Suits International who are located in Chaweng South. This particular shop is owned and run by two brothers from Nepal, who have been specialising in making men’s suits and fashionable women’s garments on the island for just over twenty years.
Baron Fashion is another of the islands well known tailors who claim to be able to make any garment exactly to order and to the wishes of the customer. Also located on Chaweng Beach Road, Baron Fashion gives you the option of choosing from a wide range of garments and is the place to go if you a looking for a truly bespoke piece of tailoring.
Of course, Thailand is famous for its silk industry and if the idea of purchasing a wonderfully flamboyant Thai silk suit gets your pulses racing then head over to the Chaweng Boutique and Thai Silk. This Chinese owned tailors has well over an incredible 5000 different types of fabric for you to choose from, as well as a large selection of 100% authentic Thai silk, all of which is handmade. Chaweng Boutique also specialise in making jackets, jeans, overcoats and even leather shoes, the vast majority of which are very reasonably priced when you consider how much it would cost to buy tailor clothing or footwear back home.
If you are specifically looking for classic Italian or French designed suits and garments then head over to Paris Mode. They predominantly specialise in a more classic European style of tailoring and have well over 100 different types of fabrics to choose from including Thai silk, linen, wool, cotton and even 100% cashmere.
No matter how long you plan to stay on Koh Samui, be it a couple of days or a couple of months, it is safe to say that your bespoke, perfectly tailored masterpieces will be ready for you to collect before you have to leave the island. Amongst the most popular fabrics that people regularly choose for their tailored garments include shiny Thai silk, blended wools, cotton and other imported linens.
If you have no previous experience of buying tailored clothes in Thailand then it can be more than beneficial to have a good idea in your mind what sort of design you want. An even better idea is to take a picture with you of a specific design, maybe it is one that you have seen a famous movie star wear, which you like the look of.
Before you agree to have your garment made it is important that both you and the tailor are 100% clear on how you want the garment to look. Make sure you choose a suitable fabric and come to an agreement regarding the price well in advance. A good tailor will probably want you to have a couple of measurements and fitting before they get to work on making your suit or dress.
Some tailors might also require you to pay for 50% of your garment up front as a deposit. If this is the case make sure that the tailor writes down exactly what you have paid for and what the outstanding balance is. Also make sure that he writes down any important or special details regarding the garments, that way you will avoid any unpleasant surprises or shocks when you come to collect whatever it is you have ordered.
When the time comes to collect you items of clothing, don’t leave the shop until you have tried on the finished items and also make sure you thoroughly check the stitching and finish. If you do happen to find a problem with the garments then the tailor should take them back and rectify the garments without any extra cost. If any slight alterations are needed they are usually done on the spot or at the most, will be completed the same day.
Given the amount of tailors that can be found on Koh Samui you could be unsure of which ones are any good or who is the most reputable. Some foreign tourists have fallen victim in the past to tailors who have ended up being nothing more than scam artists that charge high prices for poor quality goods, with the customer often finding out when it is too late or even when they have returned home.
Other than the tailors mentioned above, in order to make you choose a reputable tailor it can be a good idea to ask around with other tourists or expats that are living on the island to find out if they recommend anyone in particular.
It is also worth bearing mind that tailors who are offering unbelievably low prices probably won’t be using the best fabric or material out there. Likewise, if they say that they can have you suit ready in 24hrs, it’s probably fair to say that the tailoring won’t be to a very good standard and suits or garments that are purchased from establishments offering such things won’t last five minutes.
Also, if you ever feel that you are being pressured by a tailor into buying some of their clothes, then simply try to remain calm and polite and walk away.
In short, buying tailored clothing on Koh Samui can be a great opportunity to purchase some really well made and bespoke garments that cost a fraction of what they would do elsewhere. However, just remember that as with anything in Thailand, if it sounds to go to be true, then it probably is. Before agreeing to purchase a suit from anywhere, make sure you find a good, reputable tailor who will give you high quality products and service at an affordable price.
